After matriculating in 1979 from the Hendrina High School, Kobus joined the SA defence force where he spent two unforgettable years on active duty, something which fills him with immense pride. After an honourable discharge, Kobus headed for Pretoria where he completed his studies, majoring in Marketing & Sales Management. Being of the opinion that he was not yet ready for the jewellery industry, Kobus joined the Porsche SA sales team, later moving on to Volkswagen SA. It was there that he gained valuable business experience and acquired unique skills that equipped him for his subsequent years in the jewellery industry. He pursued a course in watch making at a reputable watchmaker and continued his studies under the guidance of his Father. He was also fortunate enough to learn about jewellery repairs and manufacturing from one of the best old school jewellers in SA who remains his mentor today. At the same time, and true to Family tradition, Kobus’s sister, Retha decided to start a jewellery business all of her very own. And it was here that the Engelbrecht was born into a brand. Located in Witbank, the store was very well situated and also very successful. Eventually, due to the fact that she had other more pressing business interest, she decided to move on and thus sold the business to Kobus. After 26 years in Witbank, Kobus decided to join his Dad in Melkbosstrand. Father and Son always had a very special relationship, and they planned to spend Johan’s last years together. Unfortunately, Johan passed away unexpectedly on 26 April 2014 – the same day that the new shop was due to open. In spite of this tragedy and his heart ache, Kobus went ahead and opened the doors of the new Engelbrecht Jewellers store in May 2014, realising the dream.
